Dear Parents/Guardians:

Highlands Elementary School understands the need for a consistent homework policy. In order to meet the challenge of today's competitive society, our students must develop a sense of responsibility for class and homework assignments.

Parents/Guardians are an important part of the learning process. Your child may need you to guide him/her in organizing homework assignments. Highlands Elementary School has developed a positive approach to student skills management. You can help your child develop organizational skills by:

  • Reviewing your child's "Weekly Planner" Assignments Sheets

(initialing only if necessary);

  • Checking the "Monthly Planner" for long-term assignments and activities;
  • Reviewing and signing the "Friday Folder" (due back Monday of each week);
  • Consulting the H.E.S. Activities Calendar and adding important and personal dates or assignment due dates.

Students will be responsible for missed assignments. However,

if your child is unable to complete his/her homework, please send in a note of explanation to the teacher. Students who demonstrate a pattern of missed assignments may be assigned to the Helping Hands Center upon the recommendations of the classroom teacher. The Center is held in the Cafeteria from 3:15-4:00 P.M. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays and is supervised by H.E.S. staff members who assist students with organizational skills.

Each child will receive a three-ring binder provided by the school to hold the Weekly and Monthly Planner and Homework sheets. Pupils will be responsible for replacing lost or damaged binders.
